Allison Young is a musician, educator, and arts entrepreneur currently based in northern Colorado. She performs in both jazz and classical realms as a saxophone player and woodwind doubler, and enjoys collaborating and creating with musicians in a variety of styles. Allison performs locally as a bandleader and sideperson for groups such as the Drew Zaremba Jazz Fellowship Orchestra, the Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra, the Annie Booth Big Band, and the Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra. She has performed alongside musicians such as Wayne Bergeron, Sheila Jordan, Greg Gisbert, Steve Kovalcheck, and Jim White. Allison has recorded baritone saxophone and bass clarinet with the Zaremba Jazz Fellowship, Ted Davies Big Band, and the Colorado Jazz Repertory Orchestra, all set to release records this year. In addition, Allison was recently one of 20 mentees selected for the Women in Jazz Mentorship Program where she worked with her mentor, saxophonist Caroline Davis, and collaborated with talented young female and non-binary musicians across the country.
Allison earned her Bachelors of Music in Music Business from the University of Northern Colorado in May 2022 where she studied saxophone with Dr. Andrew Dahlke and Marc Schwartz. While at UNC, she earned two Downbeat awards while playing in Jazz Lab I, directed by Dana Landry, and Funk Lab, directed by Dr. Brian Claxton. She also served as the Artist Liaison and assistant director of Women in Jazz Day for UNC’s Jazz Education Network chapter, the largest chapter in the country. In addition, she placed fourth in the University’s Southard Competition in 2020, and was named the UNC Presser Scholar in 2021. As an educator, Allison runs her own private studio and frequently works with local middle school and high school band programs hosting workshops and masterclasses.
