Established in 1997, Billy Strayhorn Songs, Inc. looks to bring recognition to the composer, arranger, lyricist and pianist while recognizing his significant contributions to the world of music. The goal of BSSI. is to make Strayhorn’s music available to the public and to capture, manage, preserve, and expand the artist’s legacy. BSSI. manages and monitors the production, sale, and distribution of Billy Strayhorn charts and scores, and grants the rights to use Strayhorn’s music in live productions. BSSI also works with Reservoir Music and Hal Leonard to administer the Strayhorn catalog and its print publishing. BSSI. and the Billy Strayhorn Foundation currently partners with several college and university jazz programs, as well as several prestigious jazz camps, each of which offers a Billy Strayhorn scholarship to its students for jazz music.
