The School of Music Vocations at SWCC
Creston, Iowa
A third-generation jazz musician, Tyler Thomas’ love for the music and its traditions stem from a place of deep personal resonance. Tyler has taught at the elementary, secondary, and post-secondary level, and has enjoyed serving as a guest conductor for honors mixed choirs and vocal jazz ensembles in his native Upstate New York. In 2022, he joined the faculty of The School for Music Vocations in Creston, Iowa, teaching jazz voice, music theory, ear training, and directing one of three vocal jazz ensembles there. Tyler is an experienced and prolific songwriter: his current creative projects include new albums of original music, including his cycle A Song of Once Upon a Time—a musical retelling of the monomyth. He holds a B.M. in Music Education from SUNY Potsdam, and both an M.M. and a D.M.A. in Jazz Studies from the University of North Texas.
