Baritone Saxophonist Adam Schroeder has established his influence as a major voice and force within the global jazz community becoming the first call for a multitude of musical situations in addition to his dedication and devotion towards extensive educational outreach. His debut release, “A Handful of Stars,” (CAPRI 2010) reached #10 on the JazzWeek Radio Chart and was also recognized as one of the “Top 100 Releases for 2010.” “Let’s,” (CAPRI 2014) his second release as a leader was recognized by the JazzWeek National Jazz Radio Chart as one of the “Top 100 Releases for 2014.” Holding a BM in Jazz Studies from Texas State University, San Marcos and a MM in Jazz Studies from the Bob Cole Conservatory of Music, California State University, Long Beach, Schroeder presently serves as an Associate Professor of Jazz & Commercial Music at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and was just awarded the University’s “Charles Vanda Award for the Excellence in the Arts” (2022). As a Yamaha Artist, a D’Addario Reeds Artist and a Capri Records Artist, Adam; voted a “Rising Star” on the Baritone Saxophone in Down Beat Magazine’s 59th, 63rd, 64th, 65th, 66th, 67th and 70th Annual Critic’s Poll and furthermore recognized in Down Beat Magazine’s 76th, 79th, 80th, 82nd and 84th Annual Reader’s Polls, regularly leads his own quartet performing throughout the nation in addition to serving as a guest artist and clinician for jazz camps and festivals around the globe. Recently he was up for his 7th and 8th Grammy nominations (Jan. 2021) for his participation as a core member and featured soloist in John Beasley’s MONK’estra. These nominations resulted in a Grammy Win in 2021. All 8 Grammy nominations have come since Schroeder’s appointment at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Adam is also the former Director of the School of Jazz at the Nevada School of the Arts. Performance highlights include contributions to many Grammy Award winning and nominated albums, playing with Lady Gaga’s “Jazz & Piano Shows,” Quincy Jones, the Los Angeles & Las Vegas Philharmonic’s, the Ray Charles Orchestra, Vince Mendoza, Chucho Valdés, Michael Bublé, John Beasley’s MONK’estra, the Bob Mintzer Big Band, the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra, the Count Basie Orchestra and with Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band amongst others. Schroeder can also be recognized for his network television appearances on NBC’s “The Voice,” “X-Factor,” “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Ellen DeGeneres Show;” ABC’s “The Middle,” FOX’s “American Idol,” Disney’s “Dodo Beach,” “Elena of Avalor” and “Tangled,” Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful,” the 64th Annual Grammy Awards, the 20th Annual Latin Grammy Awards and in film credits including “Let Them All Talk,” “Storks,” “The Good Dinosaur,” “Purl,” “Small Town Crime” and “Own The Room.” Schroeder created and curated three seasons of the concert series “Journey Through Jazz” at the Las Vegas Clark County Library District in conjunction with the Las Vegas Jazz Society, the Jazz Education Network, the Nevada School of the Arts and the Clark County School District. Slated appearances for 2022/2023 include MONK’estra at the Leimert Park Jazz Festival; MONK’estra with Chucho Valdés & the Yoruband Orchestra “La Creacion” at the Hollywood Bowl, the Paramount Theatre in Oakland, CA and at the Monterey Jazz Festival; Chris Walden’s Big Band at Catalina Jazz Club; Maxan Jazz; Vince Mendoza with Luciana Souza at the Ford Amphitheatre and the Clayton Hamilton Jazz Orchestra in Santa Barbera, CSUN, and a fall 2023 European tour.
Nathan Tanouye
An alumnus of UNLV, Nathan Tanouye holds a Bachelor of Music with dual concentration in
Applied Trombone and Jazz Studies. He also holds a Master of Music in Trombone
Performance from Texas Tech University.
Tanouye’s musical endeavors are diverse, both as a trombonist and as a composer/arranger.
As a freelance trombonist, he has worked with some of the biggest names in the business
including Natalie Cole, Johnny Mathis, Tony Bennett, Luciano Pavarotti, Placido Domingo,
Andrea Bocelli, Bette Midler, Martin Nievera, Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Alicia Keys,
Usher, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson, Maren Morris, Kanye West, Journey, and The Who to
name a few. He has spent nine years as Celine Dion’s trombonist, which has included multiple
tours in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Asia. In addition, he plays Principal Trombone
in the Las Vegas Philharmonic and is Trombonist, Composer & Arranger with Santa Fe & The
Fat City Horns, the internationally recognized band which was presented with the Dean’s Medal
Award at the 2019 Hall of Fame ceremony at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
As a composer, he has written works in a diverse range of styles for numerous types of
ensembles, ranging from flute and harp duo to full symphony orchestra. Notable commissions
include Kokopelli’s Dance (2005), 11 Colors (2009), Loki’s Revenge (2010), and Desert Flight
(2015), Tanouye has also done extensive work as an arranger and orchestrator for
internationally acclaimed artists like Human Nature, Bette Midler, Celine Dion, and Kanye West.
He is also Music Director/Composer/Arranger/Producer/Trombone soloist for the Las Vegas
Jazz Connection orchestra, which has recorded four albums of his compositions and
arrangements: Crossings (2005), Remembering Russ (2008), 11 (2013), and Las Vegas Suite
(2019).
Currently, Tanouye holds the position of Associate Professor of Jazz and Commercial Music,
and Studio Trombone at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He also plays in Lady Gaga’s
Jazz & Piano show at the Park MGM. He continues to find inspiration writing, playing, and
teaching music. He is a Shires Artist.
Isrea Butler:
Dr. Isrea Butler has obtained multiple degrees in trombone performance from the Eastman School of Music (BM and MM) and Rutgers University (DMA). His teachers include Dr. John Marcellus, Ralph Sauer, George Roberts, Tom Ervin, Clay Jenkins, Bruce Paulson, Michael Powell, and Weston Sprott.
As well as being a founding member of the Gateways Brass Collective, he is the lead trombonist of the Legendary Count Basie Orchestra and has performed with many of NYC's top jazz ensembles. In addition to orchestras and jazz ensembles, he has played trombone and tuba for eight NYC Broadway productions. Currently, he is the Director of the School of Music at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, prior to this appointment he was the Music Department Head at Valdosta State University, Music Department Chair at North Carolina Central University, and Professor of Trombone from 2017-2021. He served as the Director of Bands and music program coordinator at The University of Maryland Eastern Shore and Director of Jazz Studies and Low Brass at the University of Mary. Dr. Butler was also the Visiting Assistant Professor of Trombone at Jackson State University where he taught trombone, conducted the University Brass Ensemble, and Jazz Combo, and taught Graduate Music History. He has also taught at the Eastman School of Music, Juilliard School of Music MAP, and Rutgers University. His students have gone on to perform, teach, and study at graduate schools such as Indiana University, Berklee, UNI, Rutgers, Eastman, University of Memphis, Towson University, Montclair State, and University of Mary.
As a conductor, Dr. Butler has been the conductor of the 369th
Harlem Hellfighters WWI Experience band, UMES Wind Ensemble, HBCU Trombone Choir, Associate Conductor Brighton Symphony, and Eastman Trombone Choir and Brass Guild. He studied conducting with Dr. Jeff Jordan, Brad Lubman, Dr. William Weinert, Dr. Mark Scatterday, and Kynan Johns. While in NYC, he was a frequent performer on numerous Broadway shows and many other prestigious musical performances. He has toured, recorded, and performed with many of the country's leading jazz orchestras including Cab Calloway, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, Mingus Big Band, Glenn Miller, Birdland Big Band, Chico O'Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra, and the Jimmy Heath Orchestra. Also, at home playing classical music he has performed with the Orchestra of St. Luke's, Rochester Philharmonic, Buffalo Philharmonic, Gateways Music Festival Orchestra, and the Colour of Music Festival Orchestra. Dr. Butler is a Conn-Selmer clinician and performing artist.
