Brent Mathesen is the Director of Bands for Temple High School. He is in his fourth year in this position, his 22nd as a band director in Temple ISD and his 34th year in education. He is at JEN as the director of the Temple Blues the feeder jazz band to the Temple Highlighters, the premier jazz ensemble at Temple High School. He has a degree in music from Tarleton State University and Graduate hours at the University of Texas at Austin.
Before becoming the director of Temple Blues, he spent 10 years as the director of the Highlighters. Under his direction the Highlighters had many successes including being a finalist in the 2011 Essentially Ellington Competition, winning 3rd place at Swing Central Jazz in 2012, and winning the Basically Basie Competition in Kansas City in 2016. The Highlighters were featured performers the JEN conference in 2014 with Roger Ingram and 2017 with Tom “Bones” Malone.
Brent Mathesen is the TMEA Region 8 Jazz Coordinator and from 2012-2015 was a Director for the Texas Jazz Educators Association.
Brent is a member of the Temple Jazz Orchestra and has performed with them since 1989. While with this group he has performed with numerous jazz artists such as Bill Watrous, Randy Brecker, Eric Marienthal, Wayne Bergeron, Gordon Goodwin and Kenny Werner. He has performed several times at the Montreaux Jazz Festival, Jazz A Vienne and the North Sea Jazz Festival.
