Our prior brain imaging research showed deactivation of executive control networks in the brain during improvisation. Here we investigated if this state is associated with self-reported experiences of Flow. Twenty Artist-level jazz musicians scat sang prelearned and improvised music while undergoing functional Resonance Magnetic Imaging (fMRI).
